ASTM D7158
ASTM D7158 is the standard test method for wind resistance of asphalt shingles — the test behind the wind classifications (D, G, and H) printed on shingle packaging. Class H is the highest, certifying resistance to the strongest tested uplift forces.
The test subjects a shingle assembly to controlled uplift pressures simulating wind, measuring at what force the shingles' seals fail or the shingles tear. Like all lab tests, it evaluates a correctly installed assembly — the classification assumes proper nailing, sealing, and starter installation.
Consumers usually encounter this standard indirectly, through the wind rating on the shingle wrapper. The classification letters correspond to tested wind speed bands, with H covering the highest.
Why It Matters
ASTM D7158 is what makes wind ratings comparable across brands. A Class H shingle from any manufacturer passed the same test — the differentiator is then the installation, not the label.
