Balanced Ventilation
Balanced ventilation means the attic's intake airflow (soffits) and exhaust airflow (ridge) are roughly equal — the ideal 50/50 split. Air enters low, sweeps the full underside of the roof deck, and exits high, with no dead zones and no pressure imbalances.
When exhaust exceeds intake, the attic goes negative-pressure and starts pulling conditioned air from the living space through ceiling leaks — wasting energy and carrying household moisture into the attic. When intake exceeds exhaust, airflow stalls and the attic overheats.
Achieving balance is a matter of net free area: the total open area of intake vents should approximately equal that of exhaust vents. This is why ventilation is calculated, not guessed.
Why It Matters
An unbalanced attic can be worse than a poorly ventilated one — negative pressure actively drags moisture and conditioned air where they do not belong. Any ventilation upgrade should be sized as a system, not vent-by-vent.
