Bird Stop
Bird stops are shaped closures installed at the eaves of tile, metal, and wood shake roofs — anywhere the profiled roofing leaves open channels at the edge. They block birds, rodents, and insects from nesting under the roofing while still allowing drainage and airflow.
On a tile roof, the curved profile leaves arched openings at every eave; without bird stops, those arches are perfect sheltered nesting cavities. Bird stops are typically mortar, preformed metal, or plastic pieces fitted to the profile.
On shingle roofs the equivalent detail is the eave closure or simply the tight shingle-to-deck fit — shingles lie flat enough that separate bird stops are unnecessary.
Why It Matters
Nesting under roofing packs the eave with debris, blocks drainage, and invites moisture damage — plus the noise and mess of resident wildlife. Bird stops are a small detail that prevents a large headache.
