Box Vent (Static Vent)
Box vents — also called static vents, turtle vents, or louvers — are square metal or plastic vents installed near the peak of the roof. They have no moving parts: hot attic air simply rises and exits through their louvered openings.
Box vents are simple, cheap, and effective at exhausting the attic area immediately around them — which is also their limitation. Unlike a continuous ridge vent, each box vent only ventilates its local zone, so several are needed for full coverage, and coverage between vents can be uneven.
A common mistake is mixing box vents with a ridge vent on the same roof. The box vents, sitting lower than the ridge, short-circuit the system: air enters the box vents instead of the soffits, and the ridge vent starves.
Why It Matters
If your roof has box vents, make sure they are not combined with a ridge vent, and that soffit intake is clear. During a re-roof, upgrading to a continuous ridge vent is usually the better system.
