Roofing Glossary
Cedar Shake Roofing
Cedar shakes are hand-split (or sawn) wooden shingles, thicker and more textured than standard wood shingles, giving roofs a deeply rustic, dimensional character. Properly maintained, a cedar roof lasts around 30 years — less than slate or tile, more than basic asphalt.
Cedar's enemies are moisture, moss, and fire. Shakes need breathing room and sunlight to dry between rains; in shade they grow moss and rot prematurely. Modern installations often include pressure-treated, fire-retardant shakes to meet Class B or better fire ratings.
Maintenance is real: periodic cleaning, treatment, and replacement of individual failed shakes. Neglect a cedar roof and it deteriorates fast; tend it and it ages beautifully.
Why It Matters
Cedar is a lifestyle roofing choice — beautiful but demanding. Go in with eyes open about the maintenance commitment, and budget for it.
A Maryland Note
Maryland's humidity and shade are tough on cedar — moss and moisture shorten its life here unless the roof gets good sun and regular care. Some Maryland communities also restrict wood roofing for fire reasons; check local codes.
