Clay Tile Roofing
Clay tile roofing — the classic barrel (Mission) or flat profiles of Mediterranean and Spanish-style architecture — is fired earth, essentially pottery for your roof. Like slate, it is measured in generations: 50 to 100-plus years is normal.
Clay's strengths are longevity, fire resistance, and color permanence — the color is fired in, not applied. Its constraints are weight (requiring reinforced structure), cost, and brittleness under impact or foot traffic.
In freeze-thaw climates, tile quality matters: high-grade clay tiles are frost-resistant, but porous low-grade tiles can spall in hard winters. Concrete tile offers a similar look at lower cost and weight, with somewhat shorter life expectancy.
Why It Matters
Clay tile is a structural commitment — the roof must be engineered for the weight. On the right home it is magnificent and nearly permanent; on the wrong structure it is not an option at all.
