Cool Roof
A cool roof is any roofing designed to reflect more sunlight and radiate heat better than a standard roof — staying dramatically cooler on sunny days. On a 95-degree afternoon, a cool roof surface can run 50 degrees cooler than a dark conventional roof.
Cool performance is measured by solar reflectance (how much sun bounces off) and thermal emittance (how well absorbed heat radiates away). White TPO and light-colored metal excel; specially formulated 'cool' asphalt shingles use reflective granules to beat standard dark shingles without going white.
The payoff is lower attic temperatures, reduced cooling loads, slower thermal aging of the roofing, and less thermal shock stress. In hot climates the energy savings are substantial; in mixed climates like Maryland's they are meaningful but more modest.
Why It Matters
If your home bakes every summer, roof color and reflectivity are legitimate decision factors — not just aesthetics. Ask about cool-rated options when comparing materials.
A Maryland Note
Maryland's long, humid cooling season makes cool roofing worth considering, especially on low-slope sections and homes with marginal attic ventilation.
