Shingle Delamination

Delamination is the separation of the layers within a laminated (architectural) shingle — the bonded plies coming apart from each other. A delaminating shingle is literally coming unglued, and its structural integrity is gone.

Delamination can stem from manufacturing adhesive failures, from prolonged moisture saturation, or from extreme heat cycling breaking the laminate bond. Once layers separate, the shingle loses its wind resistance and water-shedding ability — the loose layers flap, trap water, and tear.

On a young roof, delamination may indicate a manufacturing defect worth documenting. On an older roof, it is simply one more failure mode of exhausted materials.

Why It Matters

A delaminated shingle cannot be repaired — the internal bond has failed. Widespread delamination is a full-replacement condition, full stop.
