Exhaust Ventilation

Exhaust ventilation is the half of the attic ventilation system that lets hot, moist air out — through ridge vents, box vents, turbines, gable vents, or powered fans, all installed high on the roof where heat collects.

Exhaust only works with matching intake below. A ridge vent with blocked soffits is decoration: with no replacement air entering, little air exits, and the attic stays hot and damp. Ventilation is a system, and the exhaust side is entirely dependent on the intake side.

The best exhaust for most homes is a continuous ridge vent — even airflow along the whole peak, no moving parts, invisible from the ground. Box vents, turbines, and power vents all have their places, but none should be mixed with a ridge vent on the same attic space.

Why It Matters

More exhaust is not better — matched, balanced exhaust is better. Piling extra vents onto a roof without addressing intake creates short-circuiting that can make ventilation worse than before.
