Fascia

Fascia is the flat, vertical board that runs along the lower edge of your roof, right behind the gutters. It caps the exposed ends of the rafters and gives the gutters something solid to attach to — it is also what you see when you look at the roofline from the street.

Fascia takes a beating: it catches splash-back from gutters, sits in the drip path of roof runoff, and bakes in the sun. Wood fascia that is not properly flashed and painted will rot from the top down, often invisibly, until gutters start pulling away. Many homeowners choose aluminum-wrapped fascia for a maintenance-free finish.

Because fascia is so visible, damaged fascia hurts curb appeal fast — peeling paint and warped boards are noticeable from the curb.

Why It Matters

Rotted fascia cannot hold gutters securely, and it is often the first visible sign that water is getting where it should not. When you replace your roof, it is the right time to address the fascia at the same time.

What to Watch For

  • Gutters pulling away from the house
  • Soft or discolored wood behind the gutters
  • Peeling paint along the roofline

A Maryland Note

Freeze-thaw cycles and humid summers accelerate fascia rot on Maryland homes, especially where gutters overflow or drip edge is missing.
