Gutter Apron

Gutter apron is an L-shaped metal flashing installed along the eaves that extends from beneath the shingles down into the gutter — ensuring roof runoff lands in the gutter rather than dribbling behind it.

Gutter apron and drip edge are cousins often confused: drip edge kicks water outward past the fascia, while gutter apron carries it down into the gutter trough. On homes with gutters, apron is the more direct solution — it bridges any gap between the roof edge and the gutter's back edge.

Without an apron (or with gutters hung too low), water overshoots or runs behind the gutter, soaking the fascia and siding. It is a common cause of mysterious fascia rot on guttered homes.

Why It Matters

If your fascia is rotting despite having gutters, check whether water is actually landing in them. Gutter apron is a simple flashing fix for one of the most common eave problems.
