Ice and Water Shield

Ice and water shield is a self-adhering, rubberized waterproof membrane applied to the most vulnerable areas of a roof — eaves, valleys, and around penetrations. Unlike standard underlayment, it seals around every nail driven through it, so fastener holes cannot become leak paths.

Its original purpose is ice dam protection: when dammed water backs up under shingles at the eaves, the membrane keeps it off the deck. But it is equally valuable in valleys and around skylights and chimneys, anywhere water concentrates or lingers.

Ice and water shield is a peel-and-stick product applied directly to the decking before underlayment. Building codes in cold climates require it along eaves; good practice extends it into valleys and around penetrations regardless of code.

Why It Matters

This is the single most effective leak-prevention upgrade in a roof replacement, and it is inexpensive relative to the protection it provides. Confirm it is in your quote — specifically where it will be installed.

A Maryland Note

Maryland's freeze-thaw winters make ice-and-water shield along the eaves close to essential. It is standard practice on quality Maryland roof replacements, and cheap insurance against our worst winter weeks.
