Insulation Baffle
Insulation baffles — also called rafter vents — are lightweight chutes stapled between the rafters at the eaves. They hold blown or batt insulation back from the roof deck, preserving an open air channel from the soffit vents up into the attic.
Without baffles, insulation inevitably migrates or is blown tight against the underside of the roof deck at the eaves, sealing off the soffit intake. The vents are still there — they just cannot breathe. This is the single most common cause of failed intake ventilation in insulated attics.
Baffles are cheap — a few dollars each — and install in minutes during insulation work. Their absence is pure oversight, and correcting it is one of the highest-value attic improvements available.
Why It Matters
If you are adding attic insulation, baffles are not optional — insulation without baffles destroys the ventilation it sits next to. Verify they are in the scope of any insulation quote.
