Intake Ventilation

Intake ventilation is the half of the attic ventilation system that brings fresh outside air in — almost always through soffit vents under the eaves. Every cubic foot of hot air that exits the ridge must be replaced by a cubic foot entering at the soffits; without intake, the exhaust side cannot function.

Intake vents sit low on the roof by design: cool air enters at the eaves, warms as it travels up under the roof deck, and exits at the peak. This continuous sweep is what keeps the deck dry and at a uniform temperature.

Blocked intake is the most common ventilation failure in existing homes — insulation stuffed into the eaves, painted-over soffit vents, or debris-clogged perforations. The attic then overheats, traps moisture, and in winter develops the warm-deck conditions that grow ice dams.

Why It Matters

Contractors love selling new exhaust vents, but intake is where systems actually fail. Before adding any exhaust ventilation, verify the soffit intake is clear and properly baffled — it is the foundation everything else depends on.
