Nailing Zone
The nailing zone is the designated horizontal band on each shingle — usually marked and reinforced by the manufacturer — where nails must be driven. Landing nails in this zone is what gives the installed shingle its rated wind resistance.
Nail placement is structural, not cosmetic. Nails in the zone pass through the shingle's reinforced area and into the deck at the designed depth; nails above the zone (high nailing) miss the shingle below's top edge and can pull through; nails below the zone sit in the exposed area where they leak.
Manufacturers specify nail count as well — typically four nails per shingle, six in high-wind installations. The nailing zone, the count, and proper depth together are what the wind rating on the package actually certifies.
Why It Matters
You cannot verify nailing from the ground after the fact — which is exactly why installer discipline matters. This is one of the strongest arguments for hiring an established, certified contractor rather than the lowest bidder.
