Net Free Area (NFA)
Net free area (NFA) is the true open area of a vent available for airflow — the vent's physical size minus the area blocked by louvers, mesh, and frames. A vent that measures 100 square inches might offer only 50 square inches of NFA.
NFA is the currency of ventilation design. Building codes specify required ventilation in terms of NFA relative to attic floor area, and manufacturers publish NFA ratings for every vent they sell. Without NFA numbers, vent counts are meaningless — ten small vents can easily provide less airflow than four large ones.
When a contractor proposes adding ventilation, ask for the NFA math: total intake NFA, total exhaust NFA, and how they compare to the code requirement for your attic size. A contractor who cannot show this is guessing.
Why It Matters
Ventilation failures are usually sizing failures, and sizing runs on NFA. It is the difference between a system engineered to work and a handful of vents screwed to a roof.
