Open Valley
An open valley is a valley construction where the metal valley flashing is left exposed as a visible channel down the center, with the shingles on each slope cut back in straight lines on either side. Water runs down the open metal — fast and unobstructed.
Open valleys are the best-shedding and most debris-tolerant valley style: leaves and granules wash down the smooth metal instead of catching on shingle edges. They are also the easiest to inspect — you can see the flashing's condition directly.
The trade-off is appearance: some homeowners prefer the continuous-shingle look of closed valleys. Functionally, though, open valleys are the most reliable choice, especially under trees or in heavy-rain climates.
Why It Matters
If your valleys clog with leaves or have leaked before, an open valley rebuild during your next re-roof is the durable fix. It is the valley style roofers choose for their own homes.
A Maryland Note
With Maryland's heavy leaf fall and intense summer downpours, open valleys dramatically reduce valley maintenance and leak risk.
