Roofing Glossary
Re-Roof
Re-roof is the general term for replacing a roof — removing the old roofing and installing a complete new system. In practice it usually means a full tear-off: strip to the deck, repair decking, install new underlayment, flashing, shingles, and ventilation components.
A proper re-roof is a system replacement, not just new shingles. The scope should include decking repair, ice-and-water shield at eaves and valleys, new pipe boots and flashing everywhere, starter strips, and ridge vent or other ventilation work — every layer renewed together.
Because everything is exposed at once, a re-roof is also the once-in-a-generation chance to fix underlying issues: ventilation, insulation baffles, skylight replacement, and chimney flashing all cost far less when the roof is already open.
Why It Matters
Use the re-roof as the opportunity it is. Bundling ventilation, flashing, and skylight work into the project costs a fraction of doing each separately later — plan the whole system, not just the shingles.
