Roll Roofing

Roll roofing is asphalt roofing material sold in rolls — essentially shingle material without the cut tabs — installed on low-slope roofs of sheds, garages, and outbuildings. It is the budget option for structures where appearance and longevity are secondary.

Roll roofing goes down fast and costs little, which is its entire value proposition. Its weaknesses are a short service life (often under 10 years), vulnerability to wind uplift at the seams, and an appearance nobody would choose for a home.

It has no place on a primary residence: the material is not designed for the weather exposure, aesthetic standards, or lifespan a home requires. For house roofs, even low-slope ones, proper low-slope systems (modified bitumen, TPO, EPDM) are the answer.

Why It Matters

Roll roofing is fine for the shed. If a contractor proposes it for your house — even a porch — get a second opinion.
