Soffit

Soffit is the finished material covering the underside of your roof's overhang — the part you see when you stand under the eaves and look up. Beyond looks, it has a critical job: most soffits contain the vents that feed fresh air into your attic.

Vented soffit panels have small perforations that let outside air flow into the attic, where it travels up under the roof deck and exits through ridge or box vents. This intake airflow keeps the attic dry and the roof deck at a stable temperature. Blocked or unvented soffits starve the attic of intake air, which can shorten shingle life and invite moisture problems.

Soffits also keep birds, squirrels, and insects out of the rafter bays. Damaged soffit panels are an open invitation for nesting pests.

Why It Matters

A surprising number of attic moisture and ice dam problems trace back to soffit vents blocked by paint, insulation, or debris. Keeping soffit intake clear is one of the cheapest forms of roof maintenance.

What to Watch For

  • Peeling or sagging panels under the eaves
  • Signs of animal entry such as droppings or nesting material
  • Mold or staining on soffit panels

A Maryland Note

Maryland's humid summers make attic moisture a real concern — clear soffit intake plus good exhaust ventilation helps keep attic humidity in check.
