Soffit Vent

Soffit vents are the intake vents built into the soffit panels under your eaves. They are the entry point of the attic ventilation system: cool, fresh air enters here, sweeps up under the roof deck, and exits through the ridge or other exhaust vents.

Intake is the half of ventilation homeowners forget. An attic can have a perfect ridge vent and still overheat and trap moisture if the soffit intake is blocked — by paint, debris, bird nests, or insulation pushed tight against the roof deck inside.

Continuous perforated soffit venting provides the most even intake. Individual round or rectangular soffit vents work too, as long as their total net free area matches the exhaust.

Why It Matters

Blocked soffit intake is behind a remarkable share of attic moisture problems, mold growth, and ice dams. It is also one of the cheapest things to fix — often just clearing insulation baffles or replacing painted-over panels.

What to Watch For

  • Soffit panels with no visible perforations or vents
  • Insulation visible packed against the roof deck at the eaves (from inside the attic)
  • Mold or frost on the underside of the roof deck
