Solar Attic Fan
Solar attic fans are compact roof- or gable-mounted fans powered by a small built-in solar panel. They run hardest exactly when the attic is hottest — sunny afternoons — with no wiring and no electricity cost.
Their appeal is obvious: free operation, easy installation, and active cooling during peak heat. Their limits are equally real: airflow is modest compared to a wired power vent, they do nothing at night or on cloudy days, and like all powered vents they can pull conditioned air from the house if the attic is not air-sealed.
Solar fans are best viewed as a supplement to — never a replacement for — proper passive ventilation with soffit intake and ridge exhaust.
Why It Matters
If a contractor proposes solar fans instead of fixing blocked soffits or adding a ridge vent, you are being sold a gadget instead of a system. Passive ventilation first, always.
