Standing Seam Metal Roofing
Standing seam is the premium form of metal roofing: long panels run from ridge to eave, joined by raised interlocking seams that stand above the panel surface, with all fasteners concealed beneath. No exposed screws, no neoprene washers to deteriorate.
The concealed-fastener design is the whole point: exposed-fastener metal roofs eventually leak at thousands of screw holes as washers age. Standing seam's clips allow thermal expansion while the seams — often mechanically seamed — shed water for decades. Service lives of 40-plus years are realistic.
The trade-offs are cost (typically two to three times asphalt) and installer skill: standing seam is sheet-metal craft, and a poor installation looks bad and performs worse. It is also noisier in rain without proper underlayment and attic insulation, though modern assemblies manage this well.
Why It Matters
Standing seam is a lifetime-roof decision. If you are staying in your home for decades and want to roof once, it is the strongest candidate — but only from a contractor with genuine metal-roofing expertise.
A Maryland Note
Standing seam handles Maryland's snow shedding beautifully and shrugs off our storm winds. Its longevity makes it popular on Maryland farmhouses and modern builds alike.
