Synthetic (Composite) Shingles

Synthetic shingles — also called composite shingles — are engineered roofing made from recycled polymers and rubber, molded and colored to mimic natural slate or cedar shake. They deliver the premium look at a fraction of the weight.

The appeal is straightforward: slate-like or shake-like appearance without the structural reinforcement, at a cost between architectural asphalt and the real materials. Quality synthetics carry strong warranties, Class 4 impact ratings, and Class A fire ratings.

The caveats: they cost substantially more than architectural shingles, the category is younger (so 50-year claims rest on accelerated testing, not century-old roofs), and color fading over decades is still being evaluated in the field.

Why It Matters

If you love the slate or shake look but your structure or budget rules out the real thing, synthetics are the credible alternative — just buy from established manufacturers with real warranty backing.
