3-Tab Shingles
3-tab shingles are the traditional flat shingle: a single layer of asphalt mat with cutouts that create three uniform tabs per strip, giving a flat, repetitive pattern on the roof. They were the default American roof for decades.
Three-tabs are thinner, lighter, and less wind-resistant than architectural shingles, with a shorter expected service life and a flatter, less attractive appearance. Most major manufacturers have scaled back or discontinued 3-tab lines as architectural shingles took over the market.
Their remaining advantages are lower material cost and lighter weight. They can still make sense for detached garages, sheds, or rental properties where budget dominates the decision.
Why It Matters
If a quote for your home specifies 3-tab shingles to hit a low price, understand the trade: you save upfront but get a thinner, shorter-lived roof. For a primary residence, architectural shingles are almost always the better value.
