TPO Roofing

TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) is a single-ply white roofing membrane widely used on flat and low-slope commercial roofs — and increasingly on residential flat sections, porches, and additions. Seams are heat-welded into a continuous waterproof sheet.

TPO's white reflective surface cuts heat absorption dramatically compared to black membranes, lowering cooling loads — a real advantage on flat roofs that bake all summer. Heat-welded seams are stronger than the membrane itself when done correctly, creating a monolithic surface.

The critical variable is installation quality: welding requires proper temperature and technique, and the membrane must be correctly fastened or adhered to the substrate. TPO formulations have also evolved over the years — newer generations have better long-term weathering data than early ones.

Why It Matters

On a residential flat roof, TPO is often the best value: reflective, weldable, and cost-effective. But the welder's skill is everything — vet the installer's flat-roof experience specifically.

A Maryland Note

TPO's reflectivity pays off in Maryland's hot, humid summers, especially on low-slope porch and addition roofs that sit in full sun.
