Roof Truss

A roof truss is a prefabricated triangular structural frame — engineered lumber joined with metal connector plates — that supports the roof deck. Most homes built in the last 50 years use trusses instead of individual rafters.

Trusses are engineered as complete systems: every member, from the top chords to the internal webbing, carries a calculated load. They span long distances without interior support and go up fast, which is why builders love them.

The critical rule: never cut, notch, or remove any part of a truss. Homeowners sometimes cut truss webbing to make attic storage space — this destroys the engineering and can lead to sagging or collapse. Any truss modification requires a structural engineer's design.

Why It Matters

If you are considering attic storage, a conversion, or running new systems through the attic, know whether you have trusses or rafters first — trusses severely limit what you can do up there.
