Ventilation Ratio (1/150 Rule)

The 1/150 rule is the building code baseline for attic ventilation: provide at least 1 square foot of net free vent area for every 150 square feet of attic floor space, split between intake and exhaust. A 1,500-square-foot attic needs a minimum of 10 square feet of total ventilation.

The code allows 1/300 — half the ventilation — when a vapor retarder is installed on the warm side of the ceiling and the ventilation is balanced between intake and exhaust. In practice, many building scientists consider even 1/150 a minimum rather than a target, especially in humid climates.

The ratio is about moisture control as much as heat: enough continuous airflow to carry away the moisture that migrates from the living space before it can condense on cold roof sheathing.

Why It Matters

Most older homes fall well short of 1/150. If your attic runs hot, grows mold, or ices up in winter, undersized ventilation relative to this ratio is a prime suspect.

A Maryland Note

Maryland's humidity argues for meeting — not shaving — the 1/150 minimum. Our long, damp cooling season punishes under-ventilated attics.
